Dolphins Hear Pingers Not Politicians (Yunuslar Politikacıları Değil, Yunus Kovucuları Duyar)

    Dolphins Hear Pingers Not Politicians

Sunshine Coast based company Future Oceans, has designed a small marine alarm known as a Pinger, specifically to warn Dolphins to the presence of fishing nets.
Widely acknowledged as the world’s leader in Pinger technology, Future Oceans Whale and Porpoise Pingers are already used with great success in commercial fisheries globally. Founder James Turner has entered in to the debate surrounding the ban on the Super Trawler the Abel Tasman after Tony Burke’s announcement that he has blocked the vessel from fishing in Australian waters for 2 years.
“What I find terribly disappointing” says Turner “is the fact that the Australian Government supports Pingers technology, yet not a single word has been mentioned about deploying Dolphin Pingers on the super trawler. He says the situation is paradoxical. “On the one hand the Australian Government is leading the way forward with Pinger technology, yet on the other is at least 10 years behind the rest of the world” says Turner.
“We were very fortunate to recently secure a $250,000.00 Commercialisation Australia grant to help commercialise our new Whale Pingers,” says Turner. “And the Queensland and New South Wales state Government have been using Pingers on their shark nets for more than 10 years with excellent results. So clearly the Government knows about Pingers. But as far as the use of Pingers in commercial fisheries in Australia, zero has been done,” says Turner.
In the USA and in Europe the use of Pingers has been mandated for nearly a decade and enforcing the mandates is very serious business. The US National Marine Fisheries Service has announced the closure of a large Maine gillnet fishery for two months later this year, as a result of low Pinger compliance by the fleet. “There is undeniably a challenge with Dolphin bycatch in Australian commercial fisheries. The best evidence of this is seen in the closure of a South Australian shark gillnet fishery last year for taking to many Dolphins. “If the fishery was forced to use Pingers from the outset they would still be fishing today and the closure would never have happened”.
Tony Burke’s comments yesterday that he will impose “tough new environmental conditions” to ensure “world’s best practice” surrounding the Abel Tasman. The question is: will this Government move to best practice and consider mandating the use of Pingers in Australian fisheries. “Tony Burke has a once in a political lifetime opportunity. If his Government mandates the use of Pingers he will win the support of the fishing sector, he will win the supports of the Greens, the independents and importantly, he will leave a lasting legacy as being responsible for ensuring the protection of Australian dolphins and whales.
“Given that there is over 30 years science behind the use of Pingers, Burke has virtually nothing to lose by supporting this technology. Even if only 50% of Dolphins were saved using Pinger technology, that’s a fantastic achievement and it’s an investment I don’t think the Australian Government should ignore”. No one is going to criticise him for saving Whales and Dolphins.
“If we cannot protect Whales and Dolphins, arguably the most beloved animals in the world, really, what hope is there for any other animals?
